Her left elbow and the ribbon may have been touched up and the butterfly appears to be a later addition. The paper is fibrous but with little grain, the fibre creating an effective texture for the charcoal lines. There are traces of a central horizontal fold.

1935: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.
