Date

Statue in Luxembourg Gardens probably dates from 1894. It has been dated by comparaison with two lithographs of a similar subject, Confidences in the Garden c100 and La Belle Jardinière c101, both of which show Whistler's wife in the garden at 110 rue du Bac. ¹

The drawing is on the gummed side of papier végétal paper obtained from the Paris printer Lemercier & Cie, but for some reason it was not transferred to a lithographic stone for printing. ²

Conservation History

This is a sheet of papier végétal paper, prepared for transferring a drawing to a lithographic stone. The paper has a very fine vertical grain, with small bits of stalk in it, and it has pinholes at the corner and on the right. ³

History

Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1958: bequeathed by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
