Mrs Whibley was drawn on the verso of the visiting card of Etienne Olivier, clerk to Antoine Ratier, some time between 1894/1898. ¹ It is unrelated to the drawing.

The drawing shows only a head, in three-quarter view, and was drawn on the back of the visiting card, which has a slightly lustrous surface. There are several outlines to her features.

Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903 and bequeathed to his sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1955: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.

It was not exhibited in Whistler's time.
