Arthur H. Studd, The Hunterian
The portrait was drawn with a few, disjointed lines, reinforced with diagonal shading. The lines are softer, defining the shape, on the face.
The sketch is on dark grey-brown paper, smooth and rich, with a vertical grain and small bits of wood.
The inscription indicates that this drawing was a gift from the Birnie Philip 'ladies' to the sitter, Arthur Haythorne Studd. His will specified that it should be returned to Ethel Whibley and Rosalind Birnie Philip. 1
It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
