The portrait was drawn with a few, disjointed lines, reinforced with diagonal shading. The lines are softer, defining the shape, on the face.

Conservation History

The sketch is on dark grey-brown paper, smooth and rich, with a vertical grain and small bits of wood.

History

Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and given by his sister-in-law and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) and sister-in-law Ethel Whibley (1861-1920) on 11 August 1903 to Arthur Haythorne Studd (1863-1919);
• 1919: bequeathed by Arthur H. Studd to Ethel Whibley (1861-1920) and Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1920: after the death of Ethel Whibley, owned solely by her sister Miss Rosalind Birnie Philip;
• 1958: bequeathed by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.

The inscription indicates that this drawing was a gift from the Birnie Philip 'ladies' to the sitter, Arthur Haythorne Studd. His will specified that it should be returned to Ethel Whibley and Rosalind Birnie Philip. ¹
