The house was first outlined, and watercolour was then used to fill in between the lines, with some untidy work with the point of the brush within the window and doorway, and bold but indecipherable figures at right.
It was drawn on a fibrous paper with small bits of wood, and a chequered grain.

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
