The house was first outlined, and watercolour was then used to fill in between the lines, with some untidy work with the point of the brush within the window and doorway, and bold but indecipherable figures at right.
Conservation History
It was drawn on a fibrous paper with small bits of wood, and a chequered grain.

Provenance
- 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
- 1958: bequeathed by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.
- 1968: deaccessioned, in a part exchange (for Copy after Ingres's 'Roger délivrant Angélique' y011) with Ira Spanierman (n/a), art dealer, New York;
- By 1986: bought by Davis and Long, New York dealers, and sold to Paul Mellon (1907-1999);
- 1993: given to the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, CT.
