The walls and the road were painted with broad washes of paint, which dripped and separated as it dried. The horizontal grain of the paper is visible. Fine, jerky brushwork outlined the woman by the door. Two dogs are cursorily sketched in the foreground.

- 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
- Date unknown: sold through Colnaghi, London dealers, to Denys Sutton (1917-1991), London;
- 1991: bequeathed to Simon Abrahams;
- 2008: sold at auction, Christie's, New York, 21 May 2008 (lot 81).
