Provenance
- 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death, and bequeathed to his ward and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
- 1957: sold to Colnaghi's, London art dealers, 22 October 1957;
- 1958: bought on 18 September with the Helen and Alice Colburn Fund for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
