At some time between 8 May and 14 August 1877 the architect Edward William Godwin (1833-1886) made a drawing of Whistler at work on a full-length portrait of Maud Franklin (1857-1939). 2 Nothing further is known of this portrait.

A drawing by Edward William Godwin (1833-1886) in a sketchbook shows Maud Franklin posing: she is seen from the back, with her hands behind her back, and her head in profile right. Her hair is pulled back into a bun and she has a fringe. Her dress has a high neck with a small ruffle, in a light colour, set against a dark background.

From another sketch, showing Whistler painting, it appears that the portrait was a full-length canvas. 4 Thus it may have measured roughly 178 x 95 cm (75 x 37").
Maud Franklin (1857-1939), Whistler's mistress and chief model from the mid-1870s-1880s.
