A Coast Scene may date from the early 1880s, when Whistler visited the first owner, Charles Augustus Howell (1840?-1890), at Selsey Bill. 1 The sole record is the sale of the painting after Howell's death in 1890. 2

Comments

It is not known whether this was an authentic oil painting by Whistler, or what became of it (see The Selsey Shore y200). However, the painting was not disputed by Whistler at the time of its sale.
