Vert et violet: Dieppe probably dates from Whistler's trip to Dieppe in the autumn of 1885. ¹ It was first exhibited at the Exposition Internationale de Peinture et de Sculpture, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 1887 (cat. no. 186).

It might be the watercolour now known as Return of the fishing boats m1036, which bears the incomplete note 'Violet' on the verso.

It is not, as previously suggested, Green and Violet: The Evening Walk, Dieppe y328, which dates from at least ten years later.
