Bleu et argent: South Coast probably dates from 1887 or 1888 and was first exhibited in 1888. 1

Bleu et argent: South Coast, Whereabouts unknown
Only one title is known, but it is expressed in several languages and with variations in punctuation:
The punctuation of the original title was amended in 1980 for consistency with other titles. Although the use of two languages is odd, the preferred title is 'Bleu et argent: South Coast'.
Unknown.
Presumably on the south coast of England.

It was insured for £30, and listed by Whistler as 'Bleu et argent - South Coast' to be sent on to Wunderlich's in America. 6 Although Whistler's list suggests it was to be sent for exhibition in New York in 1889, it is not identifiable with any of the titles in that exhibition.
Whistler gave the size of this painting as 42 x 36 cm framed, which suggest a picture size of about 12.7 x 21.3 mm, comparing it with Grey and Silver: Mist - Life Boat y287, White and Grey: La Cour de l'hôtel, Dieppe y325 and Grey and Brown: The Sad Sea Shore y330, which were in the same exhibition.
