Landscape, Lyme Regis dates from Whistler's stay in Dorset in 1895. 1 In September 1895 Whistler wrote from Lyme Regis to E. G. Kennedy of Wunderlich's, New York, offering him 'A lovely little landscape.' 2 It may have been the 'Landscape' bought by Wunderlich's from Whistler on 3 July 1897 for £60. 3 It is not known to which landscape Whistler was referring in 1895, nor in 1897, and it is not certain they were the same one, nor what has become of it/them.
Most of his work at Lyme Regis consisted of portraits and street scenes (including Rose and Red: The Barber's Shop, Lyme Regis y444, The Little Rose of Lyme Regis y449, The Master Smith of Lyme Regis y450). The price paid in 1897 was unusually low, lower than Whistler's usual prices for watercolours and pastels.
