Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855-1936) saw D. Jerome Elwell (1847-1912) sitting to Whistler on 5 August 1900. 2 In 1902 Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) of Detroit saw the portrait of ‘Mr Elwell the artist’ in Whistler’s London studio. 3

Daniel Jerome Elwell, usually known as D. Jerome Elwell (1847-1912), American landscapist and illustrator, and an old friend of Whistler. He was born in Gloucester, MA, and died in Naples, Italy. His Venetian pastels are similar to – and have been mistaken for – Whistler's work. Elwell accompanied Whistler on holiday to Holland in 1900.
