r.: Jem Bugs dates from 1852 or 1853, and was given by Whistler to Thomas de Kay Winans (1820-1878).

On the verso is a female figure, not by Whistler.

It is fully catalogued in MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 111). The Metropolitan Museum gives the title as 'Jem Bags' but since it depicts a bugler, the name 'Jem Bugs' may be correct.
